At a moment of accelerating government interference in the arts and cultural sector, Artistic Freedom Initiative is proud to launch the Artistic Freedom Monitor (AFM) — a first-of-its-kind research and advocacy project documenting threats to artistic freedom across the United States.
🤝 Developed in partnership with Democracy Forward, Human Rights First, the UC Berkeley Law Pro Bono Program, and Stanford Law School, AFM is designed to bring transparency, accountability, and action to the arts ecosystem.
What AFM does:
📊 Tracks federal and state laws and policies affecting artistic freedom
🗣️ Spotlight reporting informed by real-world accounts from artists and cultural institutions
⚖️ Supports strategic action — including litigation and model legislation — to protect artistic freedom and institutional independence
🚀 Today, we’re unveiling Phase One: an interactive platform mapping the laws and policies shaping artistic freedom — and the downstream impacts they enable, from funding cuts to political interference in cultural governance.
