🎙️ For the German-speaking audience: DeutschlandRadio- Deutschlandfunk has taken a closer look at the growing debate around artistic freedom in Europe – and the initiative for a European Artistic Freedom Act.
The piece by journalist Barbara Behrendt follows this week’s discussion at the European House in Berlin, bringing together artists, cultural leaders, civil society and policymakers to discuss how artistic freedom can be better protected from political interference.
The key points:
🔴 Artistic freedom is increasingly under pressure across Europe, including through political interference in cultural institutions.
🔴 The proposed European Artistic Freedom Act aims to create a stronger European legal framework to protect artistic freedom and make those protections more enforceable.
🔴 Cross-border cooperation between artists, cultural institutions, civil society and policymakers will be essential to turn this ambition into concrete action.
ETC Executive Director Heidi Wiley joined the discussion alongside Milo Rau, Dr Katalin Krasznahorkai (Council of Europe) and Sanjay Sethi (Artistic Freedom Initiative), among others.
